Sydney Harbour Bridge

a bridge spanning Sydney Harbour, officially opened in 1932; design and construction was carried out by the English firm Dorman Long & Co. with JJC Bradfield as supervising engineer; one of Australia's main landmarks.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge spans the harbour between Dawes Point on the south side and Milsons Point on the north. Designed by Dorman Long & Co of England to specifications prepared by JCC Bradfield, who became its supervising engineer, the main silicon steel arch is 503 metres long and its highest point is 134 metres above mean sea level. The bridge remains the widest and heaviest arch bridge in the world. Work on the bridge began on 28 July 1923, with each half of the arch being built out from the shore as a cantilever. The cantilevers met at the centre of the span in August 1930. The opening ceremony by Labor premier Jack Lang on 19 March 1932 was disrupted by a member of the right-wing New Guard, Francis Edward de Groot, who, disguised as a military horseman, slashed the ribbon in advance of the premier. By the 1980s, its eight vehicle-lanes and two railway tracks were used annually by almost 40 million rail and bus passengers, and more than twice that number in private vehicles. In 1992 the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, 2.3 kilometres long, was built to ease increasing traffic problems.
